Description: Proven Winners brand
Double Play Red Spirea produces nearly-red flowers in June. Showy dark burgundy spring foliage emerges and matures to a nice green. It naturally takes on a nice, rounded habit. The leaves turn a nice rich orange come Fall.
You may prune Spireas in early Spring before the new growth begins to keep them more compact. Shear immediately after the flowers fade and you will get a second flush of colourful foliage followed by a second bloom of flowers. Older spireas would benefit from a thinning in the Spring every few years, to keep them from getting woody. Remove ⅓ of the thickest branches right to the ground. The shrub will grow new stems from the rootstock more readily. Spireas turn beautiful shades of orange and red for great Fall colour. Spirea is typically deer and rabbit-resistant, and are drought tolerant after a year or two in the ground.
