The tree form varieties of Rose of Sharon usually have a 3’ trunk which will remain the same height. The trunk will thicken as it matures. Tree forms are more susceptible to winter dieback, therefore it must be planted in a sheltered location away from winter winds. Best planted into rich, well-draining, slightly acidic soil in full sun and in a location protected from strong winter winds. They cannot tolerate wet sites. Flowers grow on the current year’s growth; early pruning before leaves develop is recommended to maintain size and shape. The leaves emerge very late in the Spring. Rose of Sharon is deer resistant.
