Description:
Panicles of fragrant white flowers form in spring followed by black berries which frequently persist into the winter. The glossy dark green leaves turn purple in the fall. Although privet is usually used as hedging, 'Regal's is a more decorative, tiered plant that can be used as a specimen.
Grows best in full sun to partial shade, but is shade tolerant. It is very adaptable to both dry and moist locations, but not standing water. It is not particular as to soil type or pH, and is able to handle environmental salt. Prune so that the base of the plant is wider than the top as this allows foliage to grow right to the ground and not become leafless and twiggy in its lower parts. The sun must reach all parts of the side of the hedge to keep it in active foliar growth. Major pruning or renewal pruning is probably best done in early Spring just before the plants begin to leaf out, unless you are looking for flowers, then shear after they bloom
