Allow room for these beauties. Large dense, white flower cones bloom mid-summer and turn rosy-pink as they mature. The dark green oak leaf-shaped foliage turns deep red-bronze in the Fall. Tan-brown exfoliating bark is attractive in the winter. A wonderful specimen or foundation plant in any landscape. Morning to early day sun is best as they appreciate afternoon shade in the heat of the summer. These hydrangeas bloom on old wood, therefore they may need some winter protection to protect those “sticks” from freezing to the ground. Placing mulch over the lower part of the shrub in late Fall is recommended. Some dieback will occur on these shrubs, but as long as they don’t die right back to the ground, they should bloom. To maintain the size, prune in early Spring and never prune more than ⅓ of the total growth. Remove any dead wood, and thin if needed, to maintain the size. Be patient with flowers, as they need some maturity after planting to bloom. Nearly all oakleaf hydrangeas may develop some minor leaf spot, particularly late in the season. This is not a cause for concern and will not impact the plant's health. You can help minimize any leaf spot issues by removing and discarding fallen foliage in Autumn, avoiding overhead watering and provide good air circulation.
