Hinoki Cypress is a slow-growing, dwarf evergreen that has a deep green colour year-round. Its fanlike foliage creates dense, deeply layered branches with tips that twist this way and that. Must be planted in a sheltered area from strong winter winds, and with protection from heavy snow. Very little pruning is needed but when done, finger prune the tips to prevent browning, or hand pruners to shape it here and there. More sun than shade will keep it thick and full, but it will not tolerate a hot, dry site. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions, and shouldn't be allowed to dry out. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. Wrapping with burlap or the use of a wooden teepee structure are recommended in the winter.
