Description:
A more narrow, upright form with spreading, pendulous branches which can sometimes extend horizontally, before drooping to the ground. Ovate to elliptic, dark purple leaves in the summer turn bronze in the Fall. It develops a low canopy with a typical clearance of 1 foot from the ground. Creative pruning and staking can be done to expose its irregular growth habit, giving it more visual appeal. Purple Fountain beech maintains a leader without staking.
European beech thrives in rich, moist, well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade, and does not tolerate hot, dry sites. Best planted in a relatively sheltered location, and is warrantied until October lst.
