Description:
Clusters of small white flowers produce white berries in the Fall. Green leaves turn yellow in the Fall and the shrub grows well in wet soils. Loose, wide-spreading, upright shrubs will sucker to form a large colony of stems and are excellent for erosion control. This would also make an informal hedge, for screening, and is ideal for naturalizing. The bright yellow branches are attractive in the winter and tolerates salt. This variety is shade tolerant but will have a looser form.
The stems are great in seasonal flower arrangements. Birds love this native shrub as well. Pruning to control overall mass is done by removing 3-5 of the oldest stems each year on an established shrub. If the shrub is very large you would end up taking out more than just 5 stems at a time. To control the height, you can shear it after the dogwood shrub has finished blooming in the spring. This can be done until July.
