Coneflower is an easy-to-grow perennial with a long bloom time. The daisy-like flowers attract beneficial pollinators and songbirds. Many varieties are a hybrid to the native echinacea. It is named for the spiny cone-shaped flower center encircled by slender petals in shades of pink, purple or white. Newer varieties now come in double forms and new colours such as orange, green, peach and coral. The flower nectar feeds hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies, while songbirds feast on the seeds through fall and winter. It blooms later in the season, from summer into fall. Plants are deer resistant and have few pests or diseases. Coneflowers like it sunny and hot. Though they will tolerate light shade, fewer flowers will be produced and the plants will be weakened. Though coneflower is somewhat drought tolerant, it prefers moderate water for best growth, and benefits from an application of compost, but no other fertilizing is needed. Deadhead the spent flowers heads to prolong bloom time, but leave some of those seed heads for the winter birds. Coneflower is tolerant of rocky, clay or sandy soils, but prefers soil with organic matter. Good drainage is recommended to prevent root rot. All perennials are warrantied until October lst
